Project Overview:

The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive data visualization dashboard for the school administration of an online teaching company. The dashboard needed to provide key information regarding student progress, time spent on modules, and completion rates, addressing the challenge of monitoring students effectively and efficiently.

The Problem:

Previously, the school's staff had no efficient way to check the status of all students. Gathering data individually for each student was time-consuming and labor-intensive, limiting the administration's ability to make timely decisions and provide meaningful guidance. Additionally, students lacked a centralized platform where they could track their own progress, identify areas for improvement, and stay motivated.

Target Audience:

  • Students: Required a personal dashboard to track their own progress, view completed modules, and receive insights into their learning patterns.

  • Teachers: Needed an accessible way to monitor individual student progress and provide personalized guidance.

  • Principal: Required a broad overview of student progress and module completion rates to inform decisions at the institutional level.

  • Administrators/Trustees: Needed to track overall performance trends, attendance statistics, and module completion rates for accountability and future planning.

Design Approach:

Discovery Phase:

  • Conducted stakeholder interviews to understand the specific needs and expectations of each group.

  • Gathered data from the existing manual process to identify pain points and requirements.

Information Architecture:

  • Designed a navigation structure to accommodate each target audience.

  • Developed a tiered information hierarchy, ensuring relevant data is displayed at appropriate levels for each user type.

Dashboard Views:

  • Students:

    • Personalized dashboard displaying completed, in-progress, and pending modules.

    • Visual progress indicators for motivation and goal tracking.

    • Study insights and recommendations based on performance trends.

  • Teachers:

    • View by class or individual student.

    • Progress bars indicating module completion and time spent.

    • Detailed charts showing student engagement metrics.

  • Principal:

    • Summary statistics for each class, including average module completion and time spent.

    • Comparative charts across different classes or grade levels.

    • Aggregated metrics for attendance and performance trends.

  • Administrators/Trustees:

    • High-level summaries of overall school performance.

    • Comparative data across terms or years.

    • Trends in module completion and engagement rates.

Design and Iteration:

Wireframes and Prototyping:

  • Created wireframes for each user type to ensure information was presented clearly and intuitively.

  • Iterated designs based on feedback from stakeholders, emphasizing simplicity and clarity.

Visual Design:

  • Applied a consistent color palette, reinforcing the school's branding.

  • Utilized charts, progress bars, and data visualizations for a user-friendly interface.

  • Ensured responsive design, making the dashboard accessible across devices.

Testing:

  • Conducted usability testing with representatives from each user group.

  • Refined features based on feedback to optimize the experience for all audiences.

Outcome:

  • The dashboard successfully addressed the administration's needs, providing a clear, comprehensive overview of student progress and engagement.

  • Time spent on manual data collection was drastically reduced, freeing up staff to focus on more strategic tasks.

  • Students gained a valuable tool for self-assessment and motivation, leading to improved engagement and performance.

  • Positive feedback from stakeholders indicated the dashboard's utility and intuitive design, reinforcing its long-term value.

Reflection:

This project was a valuable learning experience in balancing the diverse needs of different user groups. The iterative design process and direct engagement with stakeholders ensured the final product addressed their pain points effectively, creating a lasting solution for the school.
